The bulk of the work done at Volusia Speedway Park went into securing the track's perimeter with over feet of new catch fence, concrete retaining wall and guardrail. Immediately following last year's DIRTcar Nationals - in light of the unprecedented incidents that involved a pair of Sprint Cars clearing the existing catch fence in the pit area - speedway officials began exploring enhancements to provide a higher level of protection for both drivers and spectators.

We're excited to kick off the new season with the highest level of protection we have ever provided. The renovation project began with replacing feet of guardrail from turn 1 to turn 2 with a new inch high concrete retaining wall at the track's edge.

Built into the concrete wall sits a foot catch fence with a two-foot kick out along the top. The new fence is comprised of two-by-four welded steel fence mesh and backed by a one-inch hex mesh with an additional half-inch square mesh along the bottom 30 inches.

The entire fence is reinforced with steel cables running horizontally across the fence in to inch intervals. Continuing the project into turns 3 and 4, a length of feet of steel guardrail has been replaced or rebuilt. New posts have been embedded every six feet for added support. Atop the inch guardrail consisting of five inch steel bands sits another foot catch fence.

One thing that won't change are the 12 straight nights of racing action and the comradery that comes with it from February at Volusia Speedway Park.

You know it's going to be there every year. In fact, original track owner Benny Corbin had two stipulations when he sold Volusia Speedway Park in Corbin, a Korean War veteran, first found refuge in motorsports as a racer, driving Sprint Cars and Midgets in Indiana.

Corbin and his son Kent, however, left their deepest impression on the racing industry in Florida. This is it; it's the start of the season, and it gives me goosebumps to return to Volusia. Ryan Smith led the opening lap of the lap Feature, before Brian Brown took control on lap two with a slide job. Brad Sweet brought out the first of a handful of cautions on lap two, as he faced backwards in turn two.

Schatz worked by Smith for second on the ensuing restart before another caution on lap four halted competition. Schatz was strong on the restart once again, this time sliding Brown for the top spot to lead lap five.

All drivers were okay. On the restart, Brown kept pace with Schatz as the duo reached traffic before the final caution of the event flew; this time for Kraig Kinser with 14 laps to go. Gravel pounced on the restart, with a big slider on Brown to claim second as he begun to chase down Schatz with 10 laps remaining.

With seven to go, Gravel and Schatz exchanged sliders with the latter maintaining the advantage at the line. With five to go, Gravel pounded the cushion to try and get one more shot at the Series Champion. He got his shot and he took advantage of it.

The Watertown, Connecticut driver brought the sold-out Textron Off Road World of Outlaws World Finals crowd to their feet with a thrilling last-lap pass to score the victory. I hope this crowd enjoyed it," an elated Gravel said in Victory Lane.

While Gravel may have won the battle, Schatz won the war - again. This race team is phenomenal. We are top three seemingly every night and the car does not drop out of races," Schatz said after the race.

Balog was stalked by the Madsen Brothers in the early going, but it was Donny Schatz that made a three-wide pass for the lead down the backstretch to lead lap As Balog went high to navigate the lapped cars, Schatz made a jaw-dropping move. The, now nine-time, Series Champion glued his car to the bottom to work by Balog, Kerry Madsen and the lapped car of Parker Price-Miller off of turn two for the lead.

Lap 11 saw a pair of World of Outlaws young guns, Sheldon Haudenschild and David Gravel, succumb to flat right rear tires. Gravel was running third at the time of the misfortune.

The ensuing restart saw Ian Madsen maneuver his way back into the runner-up position. The Australian actually closed significantly on Schatz for the lead, coming as close as a car-length back of the Tony Stewart Racing No. With six laps remaining, Daryn Pittman's top five run came to an end due to a flat tire.

Gravel edged fellow front row starter Brad Sweet down the backstretch on the opening lap. Sweet went for the lead with a slide job into turn three and made contact with Gravel at the exit of turn four, ending the CJB No.

Sweet survived the incident unscathed and led the field back to Green. Sweet pounded the cushion through lapped traffic as Kerry Madsen and Shane Stewart waged war for second. At the halfway point, Sweet was in heavy lapped traffic and Stewart had wrestled second from Madsen. Sweet split two lapped cars on lap 19 and had a straightaway of clear track ahead of him. By this point, the Salina Highbanks crowd was on their feet and with good reason as there were cars all over the racing surface throwing slide jobs in every corner.

On lap 24, Kerry Madsen used a big run down the backstretch to get back by Stewart for second and then threw a huge slider on Sweet to take the lead down the frontstretch.

Sweet tried to return the favor as Donny Schatz stuck himself in the mix as well. A blanket could have been thrown over the top four, as they battled for the race lead. Race action was halted on lap 28 when RJ Johnson took a vicious crash into the frontstretch guardrail. Johnson was uninjured in the incident and walked away under his own power.

The Red Flag allowed fans and drivers alike to catch their breath and set up a single-file restart with two to go. Madsen powered away on the restart and went on to score the victory. It is an absolute joy to drive every night. I hope the fans did as well," Madsen added. Schatz settled for second with Sweet completing the podium. Sweet led the first 23 laps and was understandably a little disappointed. I was expecting him to turn back underneath me," he said in reference to the lap one incident with Gravel.

Madsen, who has four World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series wins to his credit this season, clearly established himself as the car to beat once he took command.

Shaffer started from the outside-pole position and earned the early advantage, racing by the flagstand for the first time with Tyler Clem and Sheldon Haudenschild in tow. Unfortunately for Clem and Haudenschild, the caution flag was the result of their misfortune, each collected by a stopped lapped car.

Green flag conditions soon returned with Shaffer resuming his campaign at the front of the running order. While Shaffer controlled the point, pushing his advantage to nearly two seconds even with traffic coming back into play as early as lap 14, it was Madsen who was attracting the attention, driving by Gulick on lap 11 and eventually squeezing under Mark Smith on lap Madsen followed Shaffer back to green on lap 21 and raced on the tail tank of the familiar No.

Once again, traffic came into the picture but this time acting as a roadblock around the thin lane of rubbered-up racing surface. Madsen made a few attempts to squeeze under Shaffer, but the attempts failed. To come back tonight and win is just awesome for this team. This is a Rider Engine and it is running great. Two circuits later, Kemenah was pressuring Price-Miller for the top spot. I just needed to bide my time because there were cars everywhere.

The race track was beautiful. The mechanic did his job and all I had to do was drive it. Even with four more cautions halting his momentum, a pair on lap 23 and another pair on lap 27, Kemenah was invincible, stretching his final margin of victory to 3.

Philo worked to the front early, chased to the flag stand for the first time by Macedo and Ryan Smith. Philo led the first 21 circuits of the lap finale, withstanding two restarts after a pair of cautions on laps four and eleven, as well as periods of traffic.

While Philo set the pace, the battle for second was hot with Smith and Macedo exchanging positions on several occasions, twice during the first four circuits. On lap 20, Smith worked around Macedo to take second, soon followed by a bid for the top spot on lap From that point forward, Smith raced on top of the field unchallenged, surviving a pair of cautions on laps 24 and 25 to earn the main event victory.

Despite a late attempt to work back around Smith using the very topside of the speedway, Macedo would cross under the final checkers second, followed to the finish by Travis Philo, Chad Kemenah and Joey Saldana.

Brad Haudenschild and Tim Shaffer led the make-up feature to green to kick-off the evening at Mansfield Motor Speedway. Haudenschild walked away unharmed. Green flag conditions returned on lap 11 with Shaffer still in command. On lap 26, Smith made another huge bid for the top spot, but this time he succeeded; pulling even with Tim Shaffer as the pair raced down the backstretch, ultimately holding the position through turns three and four.

From that point forward, it was all Ryan Smith, withstanding a final caution on lap 27 to pull away by nearly two seconds at the final checkers.

Madsen earned the early advantage, leading Caleb Helms and Brad Haudenschild by the flag stand to complete lap one.

A red flag on lap two slowed action for the first time. The top three raced nose-to-tail for the next six circuits until caution flags returned to the speedway on lap nine, ultimately resulting in an open red flag stop.

After a short pause while medics tended to a fan, Madsen led the field back to green, still in charge over Bayston and Martin. On lap 13, Christopher Bell, who charged ahead from the 11th position, drove around Martin to take third, now setting aim on Bayston and Ian Madsen. By the midpoint of the lapper, the three front-runners found themselves in a bumper-to-bumper battle for the lead.

Soon enough, utilizing a textbook slider through turns three and four, Bayston made a bold move and drove under Madsen to take command on lap One circuit later, Bell also found room and cruised by Madsen with a perfect slide job, this time through turns one and two. Within two laps, Bell started to apply pressure on Bayston for the top spot, chasing the Lebanon, Indiana, native into traffic on lap As the pair drag raced toward the flag stand to complete lap 22, Bell and Bayston made incidental contact causing the No.

Bayston would walk away unharmed, but would not return to the speedway. Brian Brown and Caleb Helms led the feature grid to green on Sunday night.

Brown earned the initial jump, holding back Helms and Trey Starks as the field passed by the flag stand for the first time. Utilizing the top of the speedway in turns one and two, as well as the bottom groove in turns three and four, Brown cruised at the top of the running order undisturbed until caution flags flew for the first time on lap Trey Starks, who was racing for second at the time, was responsible for the caution, slowing as the leaders crossed the line to complete lap 10; Starks would not return.

Green flag conditions soon resumed with Brown returning to his familiar lines in all four corners. This trophy is going back to his shop. What an awesome job by this whole team. We love coming out here. The fans in this area of the country know how to support sprint car racing. Everyone knows how special this race is. This is definitely a dream come true; unbelievable. A series of cautions, two of which on lap four for back-to-back red flag incidents, were obvious distractions for Brown.

Traffic came into the picture for the first time on lap eight which held up Brown just enough to allow James McFadden, Brock Zearfoss and Greg Hodnett to track down the race leader. By lap ten, the top-four were racing nearly nose-to-tail while navigating through slower cars.

In Brown's favor, a caution on lap 13 would end any further challenges by those racing behind him. I got beat last week by trying to save my tires and be smarter than everyone else.
